Police have identified the man who died after a motorcycle crash Saturday in Captain Cook.

David Morse, 62, Oceanview, was driving a 2003 Honda motorcycle southbound on Mamalahoa Highway when he failed to negotiate a turn near the 93 mile marker, police said, which sent the motorcycle “down a large embankment.”

He was thrown from the motorcycle and suffered head injuries. Taken to Kona Community Hospital, he was pronounced dead at 4:20 p.m. Saturday.

Police believe speed and inattention were factors.

An autopsy completed on Tuesday showed he died as a result of injuries in the accident.

This was the 17th traffic fatality this year, compared to 11 this time last year.
